New Developments in Cataract Surgery
One of the latest and the significant development in cataract surgery is topical anesthesia, and the development of multi-focal intraocular lenses. Topical anesthesia eliminates the need for painful injection and the patient can go home in few minutes without a patch. Cataract surgery has been performed for many years. Earlier cataract surgery involved simply removing the cloudy lens from the eye. As technology advanced anterior chamber intraocular lenses were developed. These artificial lenses were placed in front of iris to replace the removed lens. They worked well, but over the time the cornea was damaged in most of the patients due to vibration of lenses as a result of aqueous fluid from the back of the eye toward the front resulting in swollen cornea and cloudy vision.

e next big change in cataract surgery was the development of posterior chambers intraocular lenses. To overcome this problem, multi-focal intraocular lenses were developed. These lenses were designed to give the patients full range of vision from distant to near without wearing eyeglasses.In past cataract surgery was done by getting an injection in the eye which involved pain and risk.
